The Executive of the Unionist Association of Peeblesshire & S. Midlothian (owing to Mr Lorimer having to give up on account of ill health his intention to stand as Unionist candidate for the Constituency), have

unanimously decided to ask you if you would not stand for this history [historic] Constituency at the next election. I was asked privately to approach you on the subject, there is a very strong desire throughout both counties that you should allow yourself to come forwards as prospective Unionist. You would receive very strenuous support

as the Unionists who sunk all party feelings at the last election to return Sir Donald MacLean have been badly served by him. I feel strongly myself on the subject as I supported him publicly on his platform and he only got in due to the Unionist vote.

The Unionists have been working hard in the constituency and a 3 cornered contest seems certain. This ought to enable the Unionists to capture the seat.
I had hoped to have met you personally and discussed the subject. I am returning this evening to Midlothian & possibly we might meet in Edinburgh with reference to the above subject.
