May I venture very humbly to tell you how absorbed I have been in your book, wh[ich] brings before me a life like picture of those wonderful twins. The letters are put together with the consummate skill of an artist who handles the lights & shades as only a great master can. Every page appeals to the emotions, whether tears or

laughter. The serious & comic make up a glorious whole in which respect & admiration predominate & overall a feeling of deep regret that such lives should be lost to the world - but it is lives like these, amongst whom my Esmond may claim a place, who can say with the men of

Marathon "Rejoice we have conquered." With this spirit small wonder that we won the war! I am so looking forward to seeing you - I am counting on Nov 27th, if that suits you. I am longing to know your opinion of Minto's journals. Francis' character throughout the book

reminded me of him a great deal, though Minto had of course much more natural ability. I shall be so interested in discussing it all with you if you will let me.
Eileen Scott's book has again been postponed, but if the strikes permit I hope nothing will interfere with my visit.
