Fallodon, Christon Bank, Northumberland. Private Jan. 24th 21 My dear Buchan I am in agreement with the statement you sent me about University Representation, but I am doubtful whether I should sign it. 1. I shall have an opportunity of opposing the

to abolish University Representation proposal if it comes up in the House of Lords. I think this will be the proper way in which to state my view, and to sign a statement now will not make my opposition more effective, when the time comes, & may tend to

discount it in advance.
2. I think the Chancellor of Cambridge University (who is also in Parliament), should sign the statement, if I do so. Otherwise invidious distinction may be drawn. It follows from this that if Mr Baldwin signs I shall waive my first point & sign also.

I think it is most desirable that men of influence such as you mention in your letter, who are outside Parliament should make their views known collectively & I do not deprecate in any way the action you are taking
Yours sincerely

Perhaps you will consult Baldwin & you can show him this letter & let me know the result.
