Many thanks for the book on the Huntingtower, which I read straight through yesterday, with much interest. But I doubt if we have many baillies of the like in Scotland, of so heroic a type as yours. Still I agree with you that though they are unduly passive in public affairs, they are the salt of the nation.

By the by, as to your visit here, choose any other day but a Sunday. as I find by experience that all my London visitors want to come on that day, and /I

I could not comfortably have a talk with you in their presence.
