My dear John Buchan,

I was delighted to get your note of appreciation, which I deeply value - the more so as I always regard you as my first literary counsellor, guide & friend, & pay personal tribute to you as such. And let me add that apart from your serious work, yours are the sole novels I read with never failing delight, alike in the magic of the art & the beauty of

the style. When psycho - analytical novels are cluttering the cellars of second hand book sellers I am sure that you will live as the supreme storyteller of the age.

I am now seeing something of the French Army & then return to London in about a week's time. If the reviews & sales of Scipio are but a tithe as generous as the initial private verdict, I shall be well satisfied. We must meet again on my return.
