Dear Col. Buchan

I have been reading with great interest your History of the Royal Scots Fusiliers:

I am taking the liberty of enclosing a note on what I think are some slight inaccuracies and

would be very much obliged if you could give me your opinion on them.

They might be worth noting for a 2nd edition.

Yours sincerely, H.M. McCance Captain late The Royal Scots.

Notes on the History of The Royal Scots Fusiliers by John Buchan

p:20 line 20 for "Portsmouth" read "Yarmouth"

According to The Royal Scots Reg't Records, and the Marching Order Books at P.R.O. The Royal Scots moved from Portsmouth to Hounslow in June 1686; and on thence to Yarmouth. Aug. 1686.

p.38 last line last 3, should read Sir David Colyear's, as there were two Colyear's regts. Col. Walter Colyear's was in the Low Countries.

p. 38 note i. "George Hamilton's" regt referred to was not The Royal Scots (Orkney's), but Col. George Hamilton's regt, raised 1693, see Dalton's A.L's IV 9, & 291,

Mr Buchan is right in correcting Fortescue: Dalton IV, 303 agrees with Ross: and gives a list of troops in Low Countries in 1698, which includes Strathnaver's and Col. George Hamilton's.

p. 64 line 24, 25. The Order of Battle for Ondenarde was recently discovered and reproduced in "The Fighting Forces" Vol. I. No. 3 Sept. 1924.

p. 68 Map. "WATKINS" on map, top left hand corner, should read "WITHERS", see p. 67.

p. 84 line 22. LEXDON, shd read LEXDEN.

2.

p. 93 Map. 31st., omitted, see p. 92.

p. 221. Statement as to 2nd Battn incorrect "all regiments up to and including the 25th". should read "all regiments, except the 1st Foot which had always had two battalions, up to and ..."

p. 222. note. 1877 should read 1887, as date when present rank of Second Lieutenant was universally established. 1877- 1st July '81, 2nd Lts, then all were Lieuts, till 1887.

p. 227 l. 25. Is 1873 correct? I have an extract from London Gazette of 3rd April 1877, approving of the change of name from R. Nth. British Fusrs. to Royal Scots Fusrs.

H.M. McCance Capt.
