Very many thanks for your kind letter.
I am glad to say that Moucher is going on very well indeed, though it has been a terribly rough time for her. The result of the election was a great disappointment.

I thought that we should just pull it off. I cannot understand why they should be so fond of White, who is a real humbug and and idle, drinking ignorant fellow, but there is evidently something about him which makes a strong appeal.

difference. We all thought that if we could get 12 500 votes we should be perfectly safe and we never guessed that White would be able to get more than 1000 more than he did last time.
