I have just received your 4th volume and write again to express my thanks to you for sending me the history. I have carefully read, more than once, the first three volumes and am struck with the way you have covered the whole period. It is a wonderful compression without being in anyway a mere precis, and, to the military (or political) student, is an indispensable "first book" to read so as to get a grasp of the essentials of the war. one who asks for guidance. You have most commendably avoided the air of superiority too often assumed by the historian, whose task, "after the event," is always so much easier than that of the statesman & the soldier who had to deal with the problems at the time. I hope the work will have the wide circulation it so well deserves. Did I ever send you a copy of my poor effort? If not, I would like to do so.
