CABLE ADDRESS LANTICMON BOSTON

OFFICE OF THE EDITOR

The Altantic Monthly BOSTON

6 January, 1923.

Dear Colonel Buchan:-

Your History of the Great War leaves with me an impression which can only come from a remarkable book. The dangers of contemporary history are proverbial. You have not only eluded them, but you have given your monumental volumes the genuine stamp of permanence. It is quite extraordinary that a history of the Great War can be written at this time undisfigured by bitterness and personal feeling. It is still ampler achievement to have written one so copious in detail, so clear and well proportioned in design, so admirable in style.

If it were the custom of The Atlantic to review books at length, it would have given me great satisfaction to publish an estimate of your history. As it is, however, our reviews are brief and condensed, intended for the service of librarians. In this abbreviated form, I have tried to set forth my confident opinion of your great work.

Please don't acknowledge this note. I felt I owed you a personal word at least of thanks after closing the final volume.

Yours sincerely,

Ellery Sedgwick

Colonel John Buchan.
