New Club Edinburgh 1787
2nd May 1923
My dear John,
My exploit in pocketing your napkin is only rivalled by my exploit in removing John Lamb's latch-key and leaving him 8 Edw.7 in all its bucky acidity.
I hasten to return it now it has been washed and ask for forgiveness and Susie's. I

can only hope that the jus revertendi is not extinguished. We glided into Oxford in splendid time not so quickly as to content my godson but not nearly so quickly as our case went up the lum on Monday. You must not reverse a 30 year practice in order to extract the last squeeze out of a taxpayer! Mind I warned them.
Technically I am not convinced by the judgments delivered but the information most needed was neither before the Commissioners nor the Court of Session.

I enjoyed my visit enormously. I'm not sure you haven't a better claim than John Bunyan to live in the Delectable Mountains - and I have been over the Dunstable downs.
I caught the 1.20 p.m. on Monday & found Zephyrs here but old Eurus was not long to be denied his footing and now "alles bleibt beim Alten" (- kalten alten at that).
It is delightful to find you & your family thriving & flourishing. I am not going to distribute compliments, but to conclude with love & best thanks to you all. Nina reciprocates most heartily your & Susie's kind messages & hopes that one fine day we may both visit Elsfield.
Yours ever
Stair A. Gillon
