My dear Col. Buchan

I have just finished reading your History of the Great War, and wish to express to you my admiration of your work. The beautiful English; the satisfactory proposition throughout; your knowledge of events and of men, and fearless characterizations but just appreciations; your understanding of peoples and tendency of thought; your criticism of military and economic conditions; your illustrations from history and literature in extensive fields: - your work displays all the elements found in only a very few of the greatest histories of all time. It is a truly great history. I find it impossible so to restrain my appreciation as not to seem to flatter.

I pursued the story, and have in some instances looked up other sources, one by one most of the notes have been destroyed. The few remaining I venture to enclose, in case they be of any value to you in a future edition.

If I mistake not, your's will be the basis for historians of the war in the next generation or two, and hence of all that follow you. I venture to hope, also, that you will publish your authorities - not overlooking the statement in your preface as to their volume. To historical students like myself, they will be of interest secondary only to your brilliant work.
