"Midwinter"

Have followed the fortunes of your hero with great interest & sympathy until he kicked [underlined] that poor greyhound! Why make him do this? It is not consistent with the rest of his character. A man who would fight to defend an ill-treated boy, when he was pressed for time, & who could understand & sympathize with the poor tutor is not at all likely to kick a dog that happened to get in his way. (Incidently he lost several precious seconds doing so!). When you publish the story in book form I suggest you leave out the 'kicking' incident otherwise to alienate the interest of all animal

Mr. John Buchan c/o The Editor "Daily Telegraph" Fleet St. E.C.

lovers & they number many thousands. Also the Stuarts are known as dog lovers. Their pretty spaniels are historical. Have you ever read Kiplings "Garm - a hostage"? If not, do & you will never again make a hero kick a dog! I have put your review of Kipling's "Irish Guards in the War" among other "reminders lest we forget". It is very fine. Yours (Miss) A. Parker
