ELMFIELD, NORTHLEW, N. DEVON.

Sep. 29. 23

My dear John

I was simply delighted when I unpacked your parcel & saw that it was a present of "Mid- winter" by its author to me, a very humble individual, who read a Review of the book which roused the desire in me to read it.

I have always said that you were a second R.L.S. & at any rate I appreciate the gift more than I can tell & am most grateful to you for your kindness in making me such a present & it is impossible to express myself adequately.

I am staying with the Norman Lubbocks for a long week end. They live only 7 miles from my own House at Northlew, but I am returning to the latter place on Wednesday next.

Mrs Buchan has been very kind to me in sending me "the Spectator" & I get a lot of books to read. Once more thanking you for your great kindness in sending me "Midwinter"
