I have just come across an article published in the "Atlantic Magazine" of November 1902 entitled "A possible

Glimpse of "Samuel Johnson" by William Everett.

Everett works at the idea of Johnson fighting for the Pretender in rather a clever way and from pretended old documents

follows him through the phases of his campaign and eventually accounts for his escape.

I thought some of the scenes were very characteristic and well worthy your looking up the article.
