I have this minute returned to above 3.p.m Sat[urda]y 12th & find your Chap XIII & your letter of 7th awaiting me. The stupid Servants never forwarded your envelope. I am so annoyed, & you must have thought it so strange

of me not acknowledging it, but I want you at once to understand the reason. Francis & Eileen are here for the last Sunday & we look forward immensely to reading the Indian departure. I was awfully sorry you & Mrs Buchan couldn't come to the party on the 8th, it was a very happy gathering. Yours ever,

I have read your last pages & have just time before the post goes to add my appreciation of your wonderful Chapter, you have managed to bring in all my cherished quotations in a brilliant manner. You have drawn a wonderful picture of that unique character wh. it was my privilege for 30 years to love & admire - & I can only thank you

with all my heart. I think it must appeal to the public. You have made a most living portrait, & have written with an inner knowledge that one could only have expected from a most intimate & devoted friend & I cant help feeling that you have not only learnt to know your subject, but to feel a real affection for him. Thank you again & again. I look forward to seeing you before so very long to talk.

Francis is so sorry your luncheon message did not reach him. He will write to you himself - but fears his last two days are sadly full.
