My dear John
I had no intention of bothering you with a letter - but the inundation of nice things said about you, your visit and your speech at the Canadian Clubs here & elsewhere makes me think that you ought to bear the burden to a certain extent.
Dear John, you said the right thing

at the right time, in the right way and you must bear the blame.
Your friend who pens this is wagging his apology for a tail in consequence.
I wrote to the King and scrupulously omitted any comment on HRH's [ST: Duke of Windsor] visit.
With the amount of criticism flying about at present one feels one might not be fair either to him or to Canadians if one burst into a long strain of censure, but I have also written to Stamfordham telling him that I talked the matter out with you and gave you some food for consideration which you would impart to him.
I have again, in a letter, urged H.R.H.
