I met her at lunch at
a friend's house. It is a
delightful book, from
whatever angle one
looks at it. I was
presenting the men of
my College for their B.A.
degree that December
day in 1866 when
Melgund "made up"
as a man with a

very bad cold and so
hid his colours and
his breeches, but I
"nailed" his boots. The
man he beat was
brother or first cousin
of a school fellow of
mine; and Hudson

was a schoolfellow too.
