[LORD BYNG]

GOVERNMENT HOUSE OTTAWA

June 8th 1925.

Dear John,

You have brought it on yourself - I must inflict another letter on you - this one to thank for 'Two ordeals of Democracy'. [ST: lecture at Milton Academy]

I am reading it now, and as it is John Buchan at his best it is appreciated to the full.

Bless you John.

Private.

I shall leave this country in a happy frame of mind if I have seen Stanley Baldwin & Mackenzie King sitting alone in my room telling each other truthfully what their respective countries feel. M.K admires S.B enormously - probably for the very reasons that you

put in your letter. i e that S.B thinks more than he talks.

M.K on the other hand does not admire Amery. The latter tells us that no one knows the feelings of the Dominions better than he, & then he frequently writes something that hurts those very feelings. I am not overkeen on his coming out here, but the presence of S.B would do unspeakable good.

to mine about suggesting that the Dominions should really be under the British P.M. [altho it would be impossible for him to devote more than a general responsibility for their good will.]

Amery's letter is exactly what I thought he would write, and yet in ten years time it will be a 'fait accompli', so we may as well leave it at that.

We shall want you & Susie again next winter - tell her with my love, not to forget it.

Yours ever

B of V.
