Dear Sir, Although a stranger to you, may I, as an old friend of the late Lord Minto, whom I knew best in the "Mr Rolly" days, thank you for the admirable mémoir you have given us of him. It recalls him to me exactly as he was in his hunting days,

when he & my husband, Lord Battersea, enjoyed many a run over the celebrated Vale of Aylesbury.
My dear mother and I used to delight in the society of so bright, inspiriting yet thoughtful a guest, who would join in our evening chats, when the adventures of the hunting field would be abandoned for discussions on the politics of the day or other
interesting topics. I once remember Ld. Melgund, as he then was, giving me an outline of the article he was writing on the Duties of War Correspondents. His was a charming personality, which you have reproduced so ably. I can only detect one little error if you will pardon me for saying so - Aston Clinton never

belonged to my husband: it was part of the Rothschild estate, left to my mother by her husband for her life, & now passed quite away from the family.
