I love you more than ever for your kind thoughts. You are the man of all the world for backing your friends, even behind their back! And that is one of the many reasons we all love you.

All the same I should have refused if the PM had been unwise enough to offer it. It would have been an insult to Oxford history offered by a Cambridge P.M. And to my thinking Davis is preeminently the right man, since our Hal [ST: Fisher] is going to reign at New [ST: College] Davis is a great historical

scholar, and after making a great impress on mediaeval history he has now taken up modern history in accordance with the zeit-geist, and the true needs of the time. He has, to my thinking, all the right ideas as to what an the historical school should be, and will I think know how to infiltrate these ideas into the College history dons without offending them.

Till Feb 21 then. I am looking forward to it immensely.
