Dear Mr Buchan

A few years ago we were in correspondence anent a diary I'd kept while on service with the 2nd Battn. in S. Africa, 1899-1902. This when you had consented to write the History of the Regiment. A few weeks ago I recd. a copy & am emboldened by the remarks of the Prince of Wales to offer my share of thanks & humble appreciation. It is hardly necessary to be highly versed in the art of Journalism

or History writing to realize the amount of time & thought expended even by a Pastmaster, your generous remarks anent amateur help notwithstanding.

I did not, when writing you, mention my service in France, 1915-18 in Com^d Reinforcements -L of C - as I fancied you only wished to note 1st line soldiers in yr: History.
