GOVERNMENT HOUSE OTTAWA

July 16th 1926.

My dear John. It was like you, dear old friend, to have written as you did. Bless you, old boy.

I cannot write you a complete history - it would take too long. M' King put me in this position. Either I was, in his opinion, an unconstitutional and incapable Governor - or in my opinion & I think that of other people, a moral coward.

I chose the former and leave it to posterity to judge.

I think Amery might tell you the story in full, if you know him well enough. If not it will keep till I get home and we can foregather.

It will interest you.

I was rather sorry that they thought fit to bring you into the discussion of my successor, and cannot help feeling that my late Prime Minister was at the bottom of it and said some unwise things to unwise gossips. I am sure you did the right thing.

We both send you and Susie all our love - and our unalloyed joy and gratitude for your letter.

Yours Ever

Julian.
