Dear Mr. Buchan,
I have just been sent a review copy of your Scott and may I break the etiquttte of the game to write and tell you how deeply I have enjoyed it? It is so balanced and clear and particularly at the close so deeply moving. I am sure that it is to be a big success. You certainly have Scott's own power for work.
I am asked by the English Association here with the enthusiastic support of the whole University to ask you to come and give a Scott lecture in October. Please do not plead work or even the pressure of affairs. You alone

could do justice to the occasion. It would, I know give very great pleasure to Pickard - Cambridge if you could come. We could only offer a tiny fee of ten guineas and expenses but I know that will not affect the issue. Do please come.
I am still here but eating my heart out for London and something bigger to do.
