Dear Mr. Buchan,

How generous and friendly of you to send me
your Scott, made doubly precious by its autograph! I feel
greatly honoured and delighted by your kindness. This
afternoon I have been sampling your pages: they are so
wise and understanding, so enthusiastic yet so calm. The
border pictures of life and scenery, are wonderfully good.

Pleasure at the gift and in it are hard to disentangle,
but it means a great deal to the young and
obscure to have the goodwill and generosity of the older
and the successful shown them. Thank you very much
indeed.

Yours sincerely,

J.H. Baxter
