My dear John,
I am happy indeed to possess a copy of your "Sir Arthur", enhanced by your inscription, I send you my best thanks for the gift, to be added in a place of honour to my long rows of "Buchans". I read out the first chapter to Kitty last night & marvelled again at the perfect art with which you have portrayed the Edinburgh of 1771. I shall savour the rest of it in happy leisure hours here. With gratitude to you for the gift & for having written the book to give us all so much pleasure,
Yours ever,
Macmillan
