My dear John,
I have just finished your Sir Walter Scott. It is an admirable book summing up many of the views you have expounded to me in talk & to the world at the Sir Walter Scott Club in that splendid address you gave us.
The whole man his circle his life & writings can be taken in without effort on the

part of the reader. I think I enjoy the literary criticism most. I feel more inclined to re-read the many novels & poems you praise & we love than to tempt fate with Anne of Geierstein & the Betrothed. But good as the print is I think the value is enhanced by the holograph writing on the blank page at the beginning.
