May I contribute to the spate of praise and thanksgiving presently pouring in upon you with respect to your splendid book, my inconsiderable trickle of appreciation?

It is a noble subject, nobly treated, and I would like to thank you for the very great pleasure I have had in its perusal.

I have, I think, upon my shelves most books about Scott: there is none that I have enjoyed more and to which I shall oftener return.

Faber & Faber propose to publish in the autumn a further selection of my modest esssays. Quite a lot of these relate to the Waverleys; and I should like to reprint them with the title of Some Footnotes to Scott, if you do not
