I have just read your "Sir Walter Scott" with great interest; as I expect further editions will be published might I correct 2 errors.

Merton page 31 should be spelt "Mertoun" page 107: it was not the "young" Duke of Buccleuch who helped him with £4000, but his particular friend & contemporary, Charles Duke of Buccleuch 1772-1819. I have heard it said that my grandfather 1806-1884, who succeeded in 1819, but did not come of age

till November 1827, offered to pay his debts but have never heard any proof of this beyond a statement of the late T Craig Brown to this effect. I appreciated your remarks about our "national dress" in page 242. I have always been educated to believe that a Lowlander, & still more a Borderer, hated & despised the kilt. Please pardon me for bothering you
