I venture as a mere Englishman to thank you for 'Sir Walter Scott'. I was brought up as a northerner to hate the Scot, but I loved Scott. His works have been a continual & sustained source of pleasure, in pleasure and in pain. His 'lovely pity' is only equalled by

that stateliest & royalest of poets - Virgil. To have interpreted him, as you have, must be a perennial delight - perhaps even a greater delight to you than to your readers and admirers
