My dear Sir,

Will you kindly accept the accompanying book, "Sir Walter Scott: A Character Study"?

This little book had gone to press before your magnificent work appeared. I read it with tremendous interest and admiration, and was relieved to find that on no material point was I at variance with you with regard to Scott's life and character. It gives me confidence to know that so great an authority as yourself supports the conclusions I come to, and although my little book is but a humble attempt to pay a tribute to Scott, it is good to feel that it follows, however far off, the kind of estimate that you make of the great and good Sir Walter.
