St. Stephen's House,
London, S. W. 1.
5th May, 1932
My own darling,
I got your letter this morning and I am very glad the
market stall went so well.
The debate in the House last night was very amusing.
Neville, with one foot in a gout shoe, was very clear; Herbert
Samuel, whom I am beginning to like more and more, made a very
moderate and reasonable speech, and very humorous; Winston was very
funny, but as he had prepared his speech expecting a different kind
of speech from Samuel, it was a little off the point. Then I had
a long talk with Sam Hoare about India. He is rather anxious about
the situation. I dined quietly at the Club. I have written a little
introductory poem to The Magic Walking Stick. ^his children's book
Today I have the Skywriting Commission all morning,
then lunch with the Drapers ' Company, and then my East London College
Governors meeting . Then I have the Bliss Perrys, the Americans
to tea at the House, and then I am dining with Howard de Walden.
Isn't it beastly cold? Expect me home by the first
train.
Much love
Yours, John
