Do you remember your F.O. days when we used to meet. I am just beginning your Walter Scott & am pulled up on p.15 by your statement that the Fife laird, Oswald of Dunnikier, alone made any considerable show in Parliament. Surely the Ayrshire laird (though he was also a London banker) Oswald of Auchincruive made as great a show seeing that he negotiated (it is true a few years later) the

Independence of America. I am interested in him because his sister was my great-great-grandmother. Williamson describing the picture of Mr Oswald's wife in his book on Zoffany mixes him up with Dunnikier. I pointed this out, having known the picture all my life, but Williamson did not even acknowledge my letter.
