My dear old Stair
It was a great joy to hear from you again. Of course I shall be delighted to belong to the New Club, if you do me the honour to elect me.
[Gillon succeeded his cousin George Gillon Turnbull in a large estate] It is tremendous news about Andy. Give him my warmest congratulations. I can see that lean veteran as the perfect Berwickshire laird.

Tell him I am coming some day to sample his fishing on the Whiteadder. It used to be legendary.
I am so glad that Pitliver is a success, and I long to see it. I shall be in Edinburgh about October 12th or 13th & we must try to arrange a meal together.
Ben More was a huge success. The house was good, and the place - on a green spit running into Loch Ba
in the midst of a circus of high mountains - is theatrically beautiful. The whole family - including Susie - ascended Ben More, and I had one or two great stalks, but the fishing occupied most of our time. It has been bad, as you know, everywhere in Scotland this year, but my expert family managed to catch a very considerable number of large fish. Also, we explored all that curious beautiful western part of Mull about Calgary and

Torloisk and Ulva. The only drawback was your absence. I had to send back to Elsfield unopened a dozen of good port and a half-dozen of superlative Madeira, which I had brought up expressly for you, you old sinner!
We both send our love to Nina and Isabella and the new daughter. Alice is in Peeblesshire with her grandmother & the boys are back at school. We go south to day.
I am sending you my 'Montrose' which is just coming out because (1) it is a guide to the topography of nearly all Scotland & (2) it contains most of my philosophy of life.
