My dear John Buchan,

I very greatly hope that in the
Autumn I shall be able to attend a
meeting at the Athenaeum. But I do
not like to make promises, for in the
matter of health the last twelve months
have been very disappointing. My
general condition has immensely improved,
but I still suffer from a malady (the
result, I suppose, of the original poisoning)
with which my medical advisers have
not been able so far satisfactorily to
deal. It is an affection of the throat,
which makes it hard for me to swallow and
hard for me to speak! I cannot therefore
