St . Stephen's House, S. W. 1. 15th May, 1930.

My own darling

I was delighted to get your letter this morning. I hope to get to Elsfield tomorrow before half past twelve. Detain Maple's expert if he comes before me. It looks as though we were going to have better weather.

Mary cannot come this week-end ; nor Malcolm Macdonald on the 31st.

I dined at the House last night. The party included Tony Muirhead, Alan Dawnay, and some soldiers. Tony is extraordinarily funny. Alan described how in the Retreat from Mons he started off one night, after an alarm, without any clothes, his servant having taken them off to brush while he was having a bath, and having got lost! Tony said, solemnly, "I suppose that is the origin of the legend of the Angel of Mons!"

John Edgar is lunching with me to-day, and I have my annual meeting of the Book Trade Provident Society at seven o'clock. I shall dine at the House. We have a big debate on the Naval Conference, at which our Naval Members will probably talk very foolishly.

Much love.

from John
