Will you forgive me for writing to ask you to do me a kindness which I hope will not take up much of your time.

We have been trying to collect a library for "The Viceroy' s House" at New Delhi, and some money has been granted for this purpose, and a further sum will be provided to complete the library this year. I am sending you a list of what we have up to date. As you will see, we are aiming at having the sort of library which will provide literature of interest and pleasure for visitors staying in the House and Viceroys and their families rather than a stereotyped collection of books. the solider sorts and also books of reference can be obtained from the official libraries.

I should really be most grateful if you could suggest the names of any books which catch your eye as having been omitted up to date and which we ought to have. I have no doubt there are many of all sorts, but I also feel sure that your judgment on this subject will be very much better than my own.

We are having troubled times, and I don't see the end yet. The Labour Government have been supporting us with the utmost goodwill.
