You have really given me a splendid send-off! Two things I am particularly glad about - that the Hogg chapter, which was a perfect beast to write, seems to have panned out so well and that you like the picture of Scott in his study. The latter was an

experiment in which I felt I was taking a certain risk - yet something was necessary at that point to vary the narrative & hold the reader's attention.
Well, there is every sign that Sir Walter is going to do well. Robert Lynd gave me a great splash in the D.N. He evidently thinks I am a deplorable person and hates the book, but can't conceal

that he read every line of it. The Standard made a good news story of it & I believe the Sunday Express gave 3/4 col of extracts in all editions except the Late London. Harold Nicolson is dealing with it in the D.E. on Tuesday & The Times, I expect, will have something the same day. Bullock in the S.T. meant well, but it was poor stuff. J.M.B. is one of those reviewers for who prefaces are written. Yours sincerely
