I don't know if it is orthodox to thank one's reviewer for his review, but anyhow I must tell you what pleasure your kindly notice was to me. Most of all I gloried in the knowledge that you are an expert on Strafford's period & that nevertheless you approve - in especial- of my

chapter on Irish Church History. I so enjoyed writing it that I had doubts whether it was all right. I hope that now you have spoken some of the tiresome Whiggish clichés about the great man may be discarded. But for Macaulay they wd. long since, I suppose, have been discarded.
Thankyou once more on the 'Great Apostates' part as well as on his humble biographers!
