St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1.
22nd April, 1931.
My own darling,
I got up safely yesterday to find Blanchie very well. I had tea with S.B., and we had a long meeting of Ashridge Governors.
Margo has invited herself to dine at the House on Budget night, and Eddie Hartington besought me to help him, but of course I can't.
The dinner to Johnnie Atkins ^Speclator was very pleasant. I made a fairly good speech, and Johnny a superlatively good one, which I hope will be printed. Then I went with the Swedish Ambassador and Harold Nicholson to a strange Hungarian club, where odd people warbled to zithers. I felt quite like Alice, for I did not go home until after one o'clock.
To-day I am lunching with Harold Baker, and tonight I must dine at the House, as there is a three-line whip. The Government apparently have decided not to attempt any further attack on the Universities.
I hope you had a pleasant visit yesterday t o Fritwell. The weather is still cold, but the wind seems to have gone, so I think my family will have an untempestuous journey.
I am very well. You will see me back on Friday morning. Much love, John
