St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1.
30th April, 1931.
My own darling,
I got your letter late last night. I wired you today to accept the York's invitation.
Most certainly let's have Violet Markham for the weekend, though I am afraid the sight of our numerous pups will evoke unavailing regrets!
Gran, Nan, Walter and Alice lunched with me at Sovrani's yesterday. After that I had a Book Trade Provident meeting and a Reuter meeting.
Winston made a brilliant speech in the House on the Budget. So did Hilton Young and Robert Horne, I believe, but I did not hear them.
The Press Fund dinner was great fun. I think I made rather a good speech - at any rate Winston was lyrical about it. I like speaking after Winston, for he makes the right kind of atmosphere.
I am dining quietly at home with Blanchie tonight, and tomorrow shall take my trunk to the Club before catching my train. Tell Webb to meet me at 11.8. I am longing to be home.
Much love. John
