St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1.
21st May , 1931.
Dearest darling
I hope you had a good day yesterday in town, and got safely home. I think the dinner went off very well. I hardly had a word with Alice. She made an admirable hostess, and everybody talked. I think that really Oliver Stanley and Bobbity were almost the best people to get to meet the Irvines.
I lunched with Jim Stanhope yesterday to talk about Ashridge. I got my speech over so early that I was able to attend the Ashridge meeting at 4.45 after all. I think my speech was a fairly good one - at any rate it was never answered; but that is the habit of the Labour people now. They simply sit mum.
To-day I have an easier time. John Edgar is lunching with me. I think I shall dine at the Club and go back for a late division at 10.30.
I expect Webb to be at St. Stephen's Club some time after two o'clock tomorrow.
I do not know what to do about the visit to the Lloyd Georges. He is always at me about it. I don't want to go. At the same time I do not want to hurt Megan's feelings. They want to have us and the Archie Sinclairs together .
I am enormously looking forward to getting back for the holidays. I suppose you will be at the Eights today.
Much love. John
