St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1. 16th June, 1931.

My own darling

Our snap division at four o'clock yesterday defeated the Government by nearly thirty votes; but as they accepted the amendment nothing further happened. All evening the House was full of rumours, and most of my Labour friends seemed to think an Election certain. I do not believe it. The latest news from Lisbon suggests that the Portuguese will run away again! I got home at about half past eleven .

Constance gave me a very comfortable breakfast this morning. It is pleasant cool weather, but not very settled. I shall have to be at the House today from a quarter to three on.

I have got an early copy of The Blanket of the Dark.

Mabel Grey wants to come and see me and talk about something. I enclose letters from Evelyn Waugh and Grace Wolmer.

I had a long talk to Noel Skelton yesterday. He really wants another seat if the right kind of thing turns up.

You will see in tomorrow's Times the result of tonight's division. I am not sure I want an election, for it would mean an August session.

I hope everything goes well at Elsfield, including the Pageant.

Much love. John
