Telephone Regent 1055

White's St. James's Street, S.W.1

3. July. 1931.

My dear John,

I have just read your all too magnificent article about my book & I saw too a letter in this week's Spectator about the 2 Ruthvens.

I think I describe the elder Ruthven's death at Newcastle & I say somewhere else that the Lochleven Ruthven was the son of no 1.

but (if I remember rightly) I believe there is authority for saying both Ruthvens (father & son) were present when Rizzio was killed -

no 2 presumably in the crowd "off"

Your review made my heart beat with pleasure, all the greater for not having deserved it.

Yrs Maurice.
