St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1.

6th October, 1931.

My own darling,

I hope you got home safely last night and had not too tiring a day, and also that Alice returned safely this morning.

The dinner at the House last night was quite amusing. It consisted of Charlie Londonderry, Charlie Chaplin, Malcolm Bulloch and Victor Cazalet; and Duff and Lady Diana and Eric Ednam afterwards joined us. Then we heard that there was a critical meeting of the Cabinet, and went to J. H. Thomas's room to hear the result. You will see from the papers what it was. Ramsay came in to see us, looking like death.

We have got a completely united front, but the fun will begin when we come back. There is no love for the Liberals in our ranks. Not one blighter has resigned, which means that the Government is loaded up with mediocrities. There will have to be a drastic purge.

The Rajah of Sarawak and Harrison are lunching with me to-day. I shall be very interested to meet Harrison. Then I have a Reuter meeting, and then the Oxford caucus. To-night the P.M. is dining with our Group at the House, which should be interesting.

It is a most lovely day, and I do hope you are having the same weather at Elsfield, and getting out as much as you can.

Expect me tomorrow by the 4.45.

Much love. John
