St. Stephen's House, London, S. W. 1.

8th December, 1931

My own darling

I got a letter from you yesterday morning before leaving, and found one at the Club.

Clifford Bax has written me a very nice letter. He must be a good fellow.

I had a pleasant journey down yesterday in company of old Sir Alexander Grant. Mrs. Pember was also on the train. I had a quiet evening at the House and went early to bed .

You and Alice must be terribly busy. Do I understand that John is going with you to Risca tomorrow? I am glad he is, but how about his Exam? I hope he has made certain of passing, for it will be an awful mess if he doesn't. I am very glad Bill is better.

I will take a room at the Athenaeum Club for the night of the 17th.

Rowlatt writes that Alastair was pretty good in his English and Latin papers, but weak in his French and mathematics. I am writing to Lynam.

I take it you will be back from Risca by Thursday evening. I will be back at eleven o'clock on Friday morning. I think that is all about plans.

I found the Peebles folk very well, though both Mother and Nan have been overdoing it. Will you let Nan have Nannie's

[ST - I was helping to manage a settlement at Risca South Wales for unemployed miners.]

address the next time you write?

I am longing to get back to Elsfield. Discourage John from going away too long anywhere during the holidays. It is nice to be all together during the Christmas season.

Much love to all from John
