May I venture to write and tell you as I feel I must what a delightful few days I have spent reading your "Sir Walter Scott". I don't know when I have enjoyed anything so much and only wish that it had been possible to read it before the Scottish Exhibition when one might perhaps have brought out the genius of Sir Walter more than was attempted. Not only he but the Border become so alive in the pages of your book and I

have begun to long to go & live under the shadow of the Eildons.

I hope the Centenary Exhibition is going to be a success. I have not heard much about it beyond being asked to supply some addresses.
