Dear Sir John

I wonder whether successful authors like you become quite tired of letters of thanks. I think I must chance it , for I want very much to thank you for your "Walter Scott" It is a great book worthy of its great subject, and it has already given me a number of happy hours.

You are so obviously steeped in the same traditions, and have so plainly penetrated to the inner secrets and mysteries of the same countrysides that you have been able to do what probably no other living man could do.

And I believe that, like Scott himself , you are just in time. After another generation has arisen there may well remain no one possessed of the secret. Now perhaps it will live. You have sent me back to the novels, and increased my love for a very loveable man. Thank you once more.

Yours sincerely A. Herbert Gray
