John Edgar, Esq., Killyleoch, Dumfries.
My dear John,
I have been away from home and have just got your last note, which deeply distressed me. I do think you ought to consider most seriously before you go back to the Crichton, for in that direction I do not see any hope. You are bound to have ups and downs, and your recovery is bound to be slow. But I really think you ought to try and carry on at Killyleoch, or, failing that, follow Johnnie Jameson's suggestion and go into diggings in Edinburgh near him.
Do think this over, old man. I am deeply anxious about you.
Yours ever,
John Buchan
