My own darling,

The weather was horrible in London last night. I had
a two hours Scottish Committee on the relation of the means test
to the Scottish Poor Law, when we had a posse of Glasgow and
Edinburgh bailies to advise us. The dinner of the All Souls
Club was very interesting, and I think I made a fairly good speech.
Headlam of Gloucester is very anxious for us to go and stay with
him and explore the Forest of Dean. He says it is full of tumps
and primaeval relics. Eight years ago they nearly burned a woman
as a witch! After that I went home to bed.

This is a much better morning. I leave for Hull at
1.20, and should spend a pleasant evening. Tomorrow is rather a
rush, and the most I will be able to send you is a postcard;
but I will write on Thursday, and will be back (D.V.) on Friday
afternoon at 2.53. I do hope you will not have a lonely week.
