My dear John

They did write and tell you I am so sorry I can't be with your on this truly great occasion. The reason is that though it is known to very few, I have been in a nursing home, have been for longer than I quite know but am now ever so much better but will be in the hands of doctors and nurses for a week or two longer. This is just a note of friendship to say I consider that never has this great office been put into more deserving Scottish hands.
